Ugo Guidi, Nativity (1956)
terracotta, h. 38x36 cm
Forte dei Marmi, Museo Ugo Guidi
The
Nativity is one of the most lyrical and touching works by Ugo Guidi. Holy Mary, on the left, receives Jesus from an angel, while Saint Joseph is observing and balancing the construction on the right. Between the figures of Jesus' parents there are the ox and the donkey, which are looking at Mary. On the top there is an angel occupying an angle of the scene.
This works reminds the Romanesque art: austere and solid figures, without any decorations, but respecting the real proportions. We know that Guidi in 1956 already could modify the anatomic details to express interior characteristics (
Sat figure), but in this
Nativity this does not happen, and even if the academis is quite far, Guidi wants to express his religious faith with a solid but clear and lyrical composition.
