Ugo Guidi, Goalkeeper (1963)
tuff, h. 37x44x18 cm
Forte dei Marmi, Museo Ugo Guidi
The
Goalkeeper sculpted in 1963 is a realization similar to the 1969 monumental
Goalkeeper created in travertine and placed near the entrance of the stadium of Forte dei Marmi. The 1969
Goalkeeper is one of the most famous works by Guidi.
The subject represented in 1963 is a goalkeeper in the moment in which he is doing a save diving himself and hurling himself to catch the ball. The ball is mixing up with the hands of the goalkepper and it makes the athlete and the sphere becoming the same thing, signifying the great harmony existing between the two "entities". But the attention of Guidi here is particuarly addressed to the athletic gesture, a spectacular dive the goalkeeper is doing to avoid that the ball reaches the goal, the defeat symbol for the goalie. But this does not happen because such as in other works by Guidi, the goalkeeper is symbolizing the victory against the opponent forward.
