Carlo Carrą, Football match (1934)

Oil on canvas, 90x70 cm
Rome, Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna

In 1935 Carlo Carrą, a very versatile artist who was first futurist, then metaphysical and then lyrical realist, and also friend of Ugo Guidi, took part in the second Quadriennale Romana with some works. One of these works was the Football match painted in 1934, one of his most famous works.
Carrą could not be placed in a precise artistic context because his production is in a constant renewal and change. Football match is a quite far from the realizations of Guidi and Guttuso: the footballers are actually in the "azzurro" jersey, and this is a clear homage to the Italian national team trained by Vittorio Pozzo, which won the World Football Championship in 1934. The artist describes a very agitated moment: this is a scrum in the area, with the ball which is very near to the goal while the forward are jumping to reach the sphere and the goalkeeper hurling himself trying to catching it. We do not know if the winner will be the goalkeeper or the forwards.
