Ugo Guidi, Footballers (1972)
plaster, h. 45 cm
Pietrasanta, Museo dei Bozzetti
The 1972
Footballers are conserved in the Museo dei Bozzetti of Pietrasanta and are nothing but the model, realized in plaster, of the monument created for the Federal Technical Centre of the FIGC (Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio, the football Italian association) in Coverciano, where today we can see the monumental
Footballers realized in 1974 in travertine.
The athletes are united in a hug-struggle in front of the ball, signifying the two characteristics of the football but also of the sport: the first, sport as competition, trying to defeat opponents and to get the victory, while the second is sport as union, fairness, respect and friendship. So, in this model, but even in the other realization in which sport is the main theme, the protagonists have not a definite expression, and sometimes tha face lines are completely not shaped. This is because Guidi is not interested in celebrating the single champion, but Guidi wants to represent the universal values of football in particular and sport on the whole.
