Ugo Guidi, Skater (1968)
stone
Madrid (Spain), Consejo Superior de Deportes
The
Skater was sculpted in 1968 and is conserved in Madrid in the Consejo Superior de Deportes (the Spanish sports association). It is a work that melts two themes: woman and sport. The study on the feminine figure has arrived to its most primitive results, so the face, but not only that, reminds again the statue-stele of Lunigiana.
The skater is bent on her right, performing a figure. Guidi emphasizes woman's thighs, because the thighs are the most used anatomic part in skating. It is interesting to notice how this skater appears without every detail: this is for a double reason. The first, as we have already seen, is that woman for Guidi has to be representend in all her purity, so every decoration is useless. The second is that the woman here represented practises sport: so the figure must be more severe, because is even symbol of toil and training.
