Ugo Guidi, Motherhood (1965)
terracotta, h. 44,5x13x17 cm
Forte dei Marmi, Museo Ugo Guidi
The 1965
Motherhood is in terracotta and it is the first sculpture of Ugo Guidi describing the theme of motherhood, so it is his first step towards a primitive composition according to the theme.
Even in this work the motherhood is expressed in the round stomach of the pregnant woman: it is the most evident particular, occupying a third of the composition. Under the stomach, the legs are too short for the natural proportions, and over it the breast is rough-hewed but now we can see the face, and the expression of the woman seems to be happy waiting for her child. As in the 1957
Pregnant woman the arms are stretched along the hips but now they do not cover the pubis. But the differences comparing this sculpture to the 1957 drawing are now very clear: there is not a representation of the reality but there is a personal interpretation of one of the most loved themes by Ugo Guidi.
