Ugo Guidi, Amazon (1966)
terracotta
Forte dei Marmi, Museo Ugo Guidi
A work describing again the horse with its rider, but now the rider is a
Amazon, one of the mythological warrior women who burned their right breast (the name Amazon derives from the ancient Greek
amazón which means "without breast") to carry better their bow. So Guidi can reflect on the horse but even on the woman: the amazon riding the horse is a typical Guidi's woman, with some emphasized details such as the breast and the hips, another time reminding the theme of motherhood.
The horse becomes again symbol of strenght because it was used in the battles: so it is not the agile steed represented in the
Winner horse but is a very solid, energic and muscular body. A very big horse, on which the amazon becomes very small compared to the proportions of the animal.
