Ugo Guidi, The scream (1977)

Indian ink and tempera, cm 50x35
Forte dei Marmi, Museo Ugo Guidi

1977 is the last year for Ugo Guidi, and this Scream is one of his last works. If we compared this work to the precedent, we notice that this painting is dismaller. Every colour disappears and only white, black and above all grey remain. The eyes of the protagonist (but we can say the eyes of the artist) are staring and anguished. The mouth is again an oval wide open in a disperate scream and the face is again deformed, similar to the totems realized some years before but more anxious and personal, because in this work the tragedy of Ugo Guidi is alive, he felt that in a few time he would have lost his battle against his disease.
This is the most expressionist Ugo Guidi, an Ugo Guidi who paints something that we could not see in the reality, but he paints a state of mind, an agitated and anxious state of mind. The Scream is the extreme declaration of anguish, sorrow and sufferance, physical and psychical, of an artist who reached the acme of his art.
