Ugo Guidi, The winners (1976)

coloured terracotta, h. 37x41x16 cm
Forte dei Marmi, Museo Ugo Guidi

The winners The winners was realized in 1976, and is the last sculpture by Ugo Guidi: after The winners, the artist, working only on paintings and drawings, would have not realized sculptures anymore. In 1976 there were the Olympic Games of Montreal, so this terracotta represents the olympic podium and is an hommage towards the champions and the winners of the competitions. But we must also analyze the message of this work, because is one of the most significant sculptures by Guidi.
If we look at this work, we notice that the theme of the sport comes back, in this case with the symbol of the victory, the podium, representing the right end of all the sacrifices and the efforts the athlete made during his training and even of his way during which he defeated all his opponents. So the podium becomes the victory of the artist, the victory of his life and of his art against all the obstacles he met during his career, a victory which will make him survive in this world even after his passing. And moreover, The winners represents the apex of Ugo Guidi's sculpture and one of the highest points of abstraction.
