Ugo Guidi, Adolescent (1947)
wood, h. 101 cm
Forte dei Marmi, Museo Ugo Guidi
Realized in 1947, the
Adolescent is one of the first steps towards Guidi's intimate and primitive studies. Even though some academism is still present, we can notice a more personal approach to the material, that now is wood and not marble: this is a very importan particular, because tha marble was the material of the tradition and of the classicism, and his abandon means the first step towards a personal poetic.
The shapes of the girl could be realistic, but if we see better we can observe that the hair is only rough-hewed with some hits given to the wood. Then, the fingers of hands and foots are attacched, and those of the left hand are almost united to the stomach. The eyes are only two ellipsis and the mouth is scarcely designed. The body moreover is sat on a non-definite support. Finally, another detail that puts the work off to later creations is the gesture of the
Adolescent that brings a hand to her stomach, bringing forward the statues representing the theme of the motherhood, which will become very loved by Ugo Guidi.
