Ugo Guidi, Totem figure with sun (1974)

terracotta, h. 36x20x14 cm
Forte dei Marmi, Museo Ugo Guidi

It seems that the word "totem" comes from a dialect spoken by some Indian tribes living in near the Great Lakes, in Canada. The totem is a symbol, an idol the tribes adore and that represents one of the the most important entities of their religion. Ugo Guidi takes the word "toten" and gives it to some sculpture of him, the most abstract sculpture, farest from reality but nearest to a more expressive freedom and to a more intimate study.
Totem figure with sun is a terracotta realized in 1974, when the study towards the pure shape has become mature. The sun is symbol of life and is in the centre of the composition, represented by a circle. The work is an unique block, a simple and solid shape, with some leaning elements, a common characteristic for the totem figures by Guidi.
